A GiftCard is a plastic card that is generally similar in appearance to a credit or debit card. A GiftCard is branded to an individual retailer or consumer service provider and replaces and upgrades the retailer’s paper gift voucher scheme. A GiftCard has no value until it is activated so may be safely displayed within a retailer’s own outlets as well as distributed for sale in other retail locations.
Buying a GiftCard loads up the balance in the GiftCard’s stored value account by the amount paid for the card, so buying a $500 GiftCard would load $500 into that card’s account. GiftCards work by swiping the mag stripe or bar code on the card at the retailer’s cashier to activate, spend or reload the card. ValuAccess checks, validates and authorises each transaction in real time.
The remaining balance on the GiftCard can be used at a later date and the GiftCard can be reloaded with additional value, as permitted by the retailer’s programme.
